any tricks on putting new line on

is there anything i can do to stop it from springing off the reel when i flip the bail

Buy a more supple brand of mono, make sure you wind "with" the coils from the spool and not "against" them, and be sure you don't overfill the spool. You need to leave at least 1/8" of the spool's lip exposed, to help keep the line from springing off.
