Hi folks, I have an 8' pram currently powered by an 1959 3hp Evinrude Lightwin. The motor runs but has a lot of hours on it. I am considering a new 4 stroke. Options seem to be 2.5 hp or 3.5 hp. Does anyone have a gut feel for what HP the old Evenrude might be putting out on an equivalent basis. Also I don't want to start a huge debate on manufacturers, but does anyone have any comments on Tohatsu's 2.5hp or 3.5hp versus another favorite brand? Thanks,Stu

6 Vote(s)

The floats I bought are 2" and torpedo shape and described as to fit the 6" squid. Do you have any tricks to get them to slide into the squid? I tried to lube them with Pam cooking spray and the floats went in about half way before becoming stuck. I've already ruined two squid and I need about 50 of these rigged. Thanks,Todd

8 Vote(s)

Not as good as last night but still pretty good. Left the dock at 5:00 am. with father and son fly charter. As we passed by the inlet heading to the back the water was 58 degrees. Found a spot on a back flat that was 72 degrees and started fishing. Dad was more interested in seeing his son fish and sat back and watched his son and barely wet a line all night.First fish was a nice blue that took a chartreuse deceiver and bit it off before we could net it. Little while later he got landed this one on a popping fly.Image: http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i224/CapeMayRay/Album%202/IMG_1280.jpg Decided to use the popping fly the rest of the night as the surface action was what he really wanted. The wind was stronger than the night before and the new moon tides where higher. The wind made it more difficult to get a good angle where I really wanted to fish so I had to go to plan B.We managed another bass with the tide covering the sod banks but saw no signs of fish or bait to clue us in on a particular area that might be hot. I knew when the tide started out all the creeks and run offs would hold some fish. The wait paid off. We tried a couple of spots, but found stripers feeding at a sod bank drain off. Young guy missed more fish than he caught, but the action was fast and exciting. He was finding it difficult to strip set his hook up instead of lifting the rod and was trying to set the hook when he saw the fish hit instead of when feeling the weight. I managed get him a few stripers with his biggest 24 1/2 inches.Image: http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i224/CapeMayRay/Album%202/IMG_1283.jpg It was a fun night but a bit cold for a July evening.

15 Vote(s)

July 1, 2008After the big blow that weve had the last few days, the seas finally calmed down enough today for us to get back out. I fished the shark hole this morning, and caught a handful of small kings, with only one being big enough to boat. This afternoon, we went to the Atlantic Ledge. We started out bottom fishing, and caught a bunch of undersized beeliners, and lost a couple of grouper in the rocks. While bottom fishing, we saw a couple of kings sky up, so we decided to troll for a while. First bait in the water, BAM fish on. While fighting it, part of the party starting feeling bad, so they decided to come back in. I heard through the grapevine that there some nice dolphin caught at the ledge this morning, so we are going go back out there in the morning. Ill let everyone know tomorrow night what we do.
First off I'd like to say sportfishermen.com has helped me enormously in the past few months while I've been learning. I am new to tuna fishing and there have been many informative posts on this site.Anyways, my name is Steve. I am just beginning to fish off Chatham in a 25' Center Console "Fishizzle" and I was finally able to put the knowledge gained on here to the test this morning with a help from a couple of friends. We left the dock at 330 and took our time rounding Monomoy in the fog. Unfortunately the fog did not lift but we made it out East of Chatham with lines in by 530. We had a couple bluefish and a bass hit our bars and trolled ballyhoo. While resetting one of the lines our way-back bar (black squid) hooked up and sent the drag screaming. Fish on. The 53" fish put up a good fight and our three man crew had it in the boat in about an hour. All the sharing that happens on these boards has been very helpful and I look forward to contributing when I can.Image: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/dswhelley/DSC_0024.jpg Image: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/dswhelley/DSC_35.jpg Image: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/dswhelley/DSC_54.jpg (All photos were taken by another member of the crew)

18 Vote(s)

This was sent to me from- kkullberg@humanesociety.orgMy resonse will follow:D Dear Sir or Madame:On behalf of The Humane Society of the United States (The HSUS) and its more than 10 million members and constituents, 188,000 of whom live in Massachusetts, I am writing to request that Offshore Innovations/Poon Harpoons withdraw its sponsorship of the 2008 Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament. The HSUS is the nations largest and most powerful animal protection organization, working in the United States and abroad to defend the interests of animals. In particular, The HSUS has a long and influential history of successfully working to end organized acts of cruelty. The HSUS vigorously opposes the so-called blood sports and tournaments that exploit, humiliate and destroy animals for pleasure and greed. In this regard, the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament is a prime example of an unjustifiable and cruel event staged annually for profit and spectacle. While shark tournaments release some of the sharks that are caught, many are killed and most suffer horrific injuries. Indeed, at most tournaments, sharks are hooked, bled, suffocated, or repeatedly gaffed. The sharks that are released experience a high mortality rate due to traumatizing injuries caused by puncture wounds from the hooks and gaffs. According to Captain Frank Mundus, legendary fisherman of whom the character Quint in the 1975 movie Jaws was based on, if one boat goes out there and hooks a dozen fish with a J hook, on average 2 will live, 10 will die (http://www.easthamptonstar.com/dnn/Home/News/Sharks/tabid/5817/Default.aspx, 6/19/08). Often, tournament participants disrespect these essential predators by stringing them up on docks in gruesome, mocking displaysall for prize money, trophies and gory glory.Sharks play a vital role in terms of the stability of the marine environment. Yet, it is no secret that the global shark population is in grave peril due in large part to human intervention. While commercial fishing has caused the global crash of the shark population, a growing number of shark tournaments in the U.S. also contribute significantly to the plight of sharks. Of the 547 species of sharks and rays known to scientists, one fifth is considered to be threatened with extinction. Scientists have insufficient information to evaluate the status of approximately 100 of these species, many of which are the targets of shark tournaments. With so much uncertainty surrounding the present and future health of sharks, these tournaments only serve to further endanger a predator essential to a stable marine environment. Shark tournaments are about sport, not science. To understand shark population abundance and population dynamics, scientists need a representative sampling that tournaments cannot provide. Most shark scientists agree that, because tournaments target the largest sharks, measurements and samples cannot be considered representative of a shark population. Shark tournaments simply cannot provide the essential information needed to understand and protect shark populations. In today's world, there can be no justification for the continuation of these inhumane, ecologically damaging and counter-educational events. On behalf of The HSUS, I urge you to respect sharks and take immediate and responsible action by withdrawing your sponsorship of the 2008 Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament. I also wish to inform you that with your sponsorship, Poon Harpoons will be included in a press release issued by The HSUS in association with the tournament and all that it encompasses. Please, feel free to contact me at *301-258-3140* so we can discuss this matter further. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you very much. Sincerely, John W. Grandy, Ph.D. Senior Vice President Wildlife and Habitat Protection The Humane Society of the United States

10 Vote(s)

Capt. John had PRETTY WORK back out today and ran offshore and worked 200-300 fathoms in the Poormans Canyon. The water looked good and there was some bait around, but no sign of the pilot whales and dophins which typically will hang on top of the Big Eye's which is what we were searching for out there. So, back in shore he trolled, all the way into 25 fathoms, picking a few dolphin a long the way. Once back inshore the Bluefin began to bite, and they caught 8, keeping their two alotted fish. The largest one went 115#, and they released 6 all in the 80-110# range. Well let me tell ya it was the sheet running in my spread. My only mistake was the bait was big and I didnt use piano wire w my stinger i used the 200 lb power pro and got bite off by a hoo. oh well. Do you think that #9 piano wire will affect the swimability of the bait at all. Thanks in advance for your thoughts Capt. Wm. Heade

22 Vote(s)

I have an outboard motor that was recently diagnosed with a failed midsection. For the time being, the manufacturer will remain undisclosed. My mechanic, an authorized service representative, stated that the midsection will be replaced under warranty. Upon returning the boat to me, while waiting for the part I was told that they had to remove the serial number sticker off of the outside of the motor as well as the engine block and the emissions rating sticker to send it to the manufacturer. I was told that since it had to do with emissions they need to document it with the government. My question is does this sound legit, or am I getting screwed out of my remaining warranty period. This remaining warranty is under a year. Thanks for any input.

10 Vote(s)

The long beveled shape of the Jinkster jig, along with its rear-weighted body, generates a fast vertical drop with an erratic fluttering action that is excellent for enticing large fish. The luminous body also better excites visual predators. Guarantees more reaction strikes from many big game species. Jigs are usually categorized as either center or bottom balance. Center balance models fall slower with a fluttering zig zag motion and dart out sideways to the general direction they are being retrieved when the angler jerks the rod. They are designed to be fished at any depth from the bottom to the top of the water Bottom balance jigs are designed to fall quickly and produce a tighter rolling or serpentine motion when retrieved. These models are effective when fish are holding at the bottomHere is a compare of SIZES of the OTI and Hammered diamond jid in 8 and 10oz

19 Vote(s)

The reel definitely has issues and needs repair, but I can't seem to find any source from searches, and I don't even know if Olympic is even made any longer, what the reel is worth, and how much to put into it if I can find a repair source. I am guessing it is good quality, but I have no idea there either. Sort of a funky levelwind system, but I assume this type does work. If it is worth repairing, or if I can find some outfit that does this, I would be using it in Alaska for Halibut and Salmon occasionally.Any help here would be GREATLY appreciated as if you haven't already guessed, I am pretty green in this area. Thanks,Jim

15 Vote(s)
